Playing With Our Food

Nothing says, “it’s back to school time” like a biology dissection. After our week of Easter break, it was time to get back into the swing of things. Starting off the week with a little fun didn’t hurt either.

My father-in-law has been keeping chickens for a few months now. It started out as a fun project to keep himself busy and quickly developed into something a bit bigger than he anticipated.

It seems he thought the chickens would grow a bit faster than they have been. They also seem to be eating quite a bit more than previously thought; they are picky about what they eat and are a great deal of work.

Because of these factors (and possibly a few more) my father-in-law has decided to call it quits and simply use the chickens he already has.

This past weekend, he thoughtfully asked if the kids would like a quick biology lesson. He thought he would cut open one of the chickens and teach them all about the inner workings of birds!

The backbone, ribs, and wings of the chicken.

The lesson was a lot of fun! Dad was very thorough in explaining all the different parts of the bird’s digestive system and bone structure. He answered their questions and teased them about eating the giblets as a snack.

The kids were a little squeamish at first, but they quickly got into the lesson and learned quite a bit.

Now we are back on track with our lessons, with five more weeks of school to go! It seems like the year just started and here we are, already preparing for summer.

Can anyone guess what we had for lunch? Delicious!

  1. We did that with turkeys last year. A good friend was getting them ready for Thanksgiving so they invited us over for the whole process. The older boys were NOT into it, but my girlie-girl seemed to find it interesting, lol. It is great for a highschool transcript for biology w/ “labs” *wink*

  2. Ummm…you might have started the post with a “graphic” warning. lol Mom said she heard lots of “ewwwwwww!” coming from the kitchen. lol I was surprised, since I don’t remember her saying they were squeamish with the rabbits. I guess being older isn’t necessarily better? 🙂

    • LOL… I probably would have, had I thought of it. The girls did do a lot of “ewwwwwing” at first. This took me completely by surprise as they did so well with rabbits. Oh well, there’s no accounting for kids.

  3. I have to say that this thoroughly grossed me out. haha! You’d think that after all these years of obscure animal dissections I’d be fine with this, but there’s just something about dead birds (particularly chickens) that makes me squirm. Glad the kids had fun, though!

  4. We raise chickens also, we raise layers and meat birds. My oldest (4yr) loves to “help” do the butchering, he helps catch and we count the heads and feet (once they are off) we discuss all the organs and parts of the bird. We check out the stomach and crop contents, we look at the eggs inside the chicken or testicles. We do turkeys in the fall also, the pigs we send to the butcher since we sell them and is required by law.

  6. Ew. LOL. My first thought was “if I decide to homeschool, am I really going to have to do this?” Actually I think it’s an amazing skill that would be so beneficial to learn. Skinning and carving a raw chicken, awesome! As long as I have Clorox, I think I can survive it!
