My oldest gal is a writer. I don’t just mean she likes to write; I mean she is gifted in it. This girl can spin a story out of thin air better than Rumpelstiltskin can weave gold out of straw. So, naturally, when a competition comes her way, she jumps at the chance to stretch her imagination and go for it!
Just yesterday, another homeschool mommy contacted me and let us know about THIS exciting writing opportunity. Philadelphia Homeschool is hosting her second annual writing competition and it looks to be exciting.
The contest is open to all United States homeschool children from 3rd to 8th grade. All details regarding the competition can be found on the Philadelphia Homeschool website. The writing contest is very well-organized and thought out; judges, prizes, certificates, and more await you.
I am sure my daughter will be thrilled to join in. Not only does she enjoy writing, she really enjoys reading others stories. It fascinates her to learn how they took the same prompt and went in a completely different direction.
Tomorrow I will hand her the prompt and watch her creativity take over. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with this time. I’m sure it will be a good one!

Have you thought about giving her a challenge similar to Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month)? While a novel might be a little lofty (or maybe not), you could set a goal of a novella or some smaller word count. It’s a great way to learn to work through writer’s block!

I never seem to find out about NNWM until too late. What month is it? She has already begun a novella, perhaps this will encourage her to finish it.

Thanks so much for sharing this! I’m always looking for things like this for our middle child. She likes to compete and she loves to write but most of the contests are too rigid to go along with our curriculum. This one is open enough and should be just right for her. Thanks again!

Additional and hearty thanks for this writing contest information. It has been on my mental to-do list to seek out further writing contests and, snap, you answered my request. Earlier this year, we similarly happened to fall upon two such contests and, to my ten-year old daughter’s joy, she won both of them. Of course, she was the only entry to one of them! 🙂 The second one was more competitive, though, and awarded her a full week of day camp at a nearby historic site. What a gift!

One of them came through my husband’s work email, a bank sponsored contest about “What Black History Month means to me.” We’re pretty confident our two oldest children provided the only entries as they both won first place in their age categories! Each of them approached the topic from different angles–I was impressed with their originality, so they were worthy articles. The funny thing is the 2nd place prizes were better. Still, they each won 4 tickets to a professional hockey game (Nashville Predators).
The other came through an email from the local historic site, where I have set up numerous field trips for homeschool groups. The educational director emailed all the teachers who have set up field trips, opening the contest to their schools’ students. Homeschool kids count! ~Carmen, xenophileathome.wordpress.com

This is amazing!! I totally want to do it myself – lol – Alas my kiddos are still too small for it but if any of them get bitten by the writing bug as well we will be knee deep in these soon enough
