The Rock

Whats_in_a_NameWhat’s in a name? A name is more than just something by which we are called; in a sense, it is our reputation. Did you know there are a multitude of names for God? Each name unique and powerful; the list is endless.

Join us on this exciting adventure through Scripture, where we will learn some amazing verses, talk about how those verses should affect our lives, and discuss some practical ways to make these names “real”.

……

“They all ate the same spiritual food  and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.” – I Cor. 10:3-4

Most people have very little interest in rocks. They are something we stumble over when walking and grumble about when digging in our gardens. I think rocks get a bad break really. Rocks are essential to our way of living, if we stop to think about it.

Rocks form a barrier beneath the soil in which we get our water table. Rocks make up the majestic mountains we enjoy admiring, hiking, and camping in. Let us not forget the beautiful rocks we call ‘gem stones’ or the equally important rocks we use for building.

Here in I Corinthians, we are reminded that Christ Himself is our Rock. It is by Him we have our spiritual needs met; taking in the essentials for a successful life.

As the body of Christ, we all receive from Him. We are each taking in the same wisdom, love, and grace. No one is denied these and no one is refused who wishes to come.

It is upon Him that the foundations of our lives are to be built (Eph. 2:19-22). Our lives, and those of our children, should be founded on the principle that He is the center of all we do. It is for Him and Him alone that we live. He offers us surety, stability, and peace. Those who build their lives upon Him never need worry for their future.

The Rock

There are so many ways to bring this principle home to our children. In the past, we have actually gone outside and looked at our home. We’ve talked about the foundations of our house and the importance of building properly. We sang the Bible song, “The wise man built his house upon the rock…” and many more.

We’ve studied architecture in general; discussing various ways to build, the importance of good plans, and a strong building point. Some significant discussions were had over which  builders added good influence to certain designs, which prompted a talk on how others help build our lives and help complete God’s plan for our us.

For the little munchkins, we decided to do something a little more simple. We went out back, grabbed a few smooth rocks, and made rock pets! There is nothing to this fun project. Dig out some paints, fun embellishments, and a little glue; you’re ready to go! Let the kids be as creative as they’d like and make sure to have lots of fun. We’ve created rock foxes, rock ladybugs, and rock bumblebees. There is no end to the imaginative fun to be had.

No matter how you choose to tackle this project, it will lead to some wonderful discussions on how Christ is our Rock. He is the sure foundation upon which all should be built and the Rock who provides for all our needs.

Which pet rock would you like to have?
