All aboard the HSM Express! Join us as we take a quick tour of the United States. Expect to learn a little geography, history, social studies, and more. Definitely plan on having tons of fun.
Once more, we find ourselves on a journey around the United States. This week, we will be taking a trip through half of the Central Southern states: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky.
As before, we are going to start off our adventure with some handy-dandy coloring pages for each state. This will give the littles something to work on while we learn about each state’s topography. You can find coloring pages HERE:
Now that we have learned a little about what each state looks like, let’s take a few minutes to discover a tad more. (Please note: This is meant to be short, sweet, and as fun as possible; not long and arduous. Choose which areas to cover with care, noting which events can be accompanied by activities.)
Jalapeno Pepper Jelly
The Dust Bowl
National Cowboy Hall of Fame
Jolliet and Marquette
Civil War (Union or Confederacy?)
Crater of Diamonds State Park
Hernando de Soto
Battle of Mobile Bay
French and Indian War
Tennessee’s Capitol Building, William Strickland
The Kentucky Derby
The one underlying issue relating to all these states is the Civil War. While my students will be covering this in-depth during the coming school year, I still want to take some time to touch on this topic. We will discuss the events which led up to the war, major events which took place during this time, and what brought out the end of the war.
This would be a wonderful opportunity to honor our soldiers! It might not be Memorial Day, but there is no reason we can’t show our respect for their service and dedication every day of the year.
For fun, recreate the Kentucky Derby using hobby horses. Race around your house and award prizes to the winners.
Feeling the need for a snack? Perhaps a Cajun meal might be in order. There’s nothing like collared greens, dirty rice, and shrimp. If you want to get real creative, try ox tail; that is good stuff! Yummy!
Don’t forget to stamp your passport books before the day is over! You’ll definitely want to remember all the neat things learned.
Time to Chime In: Have you ever had Jalapeno Jelly? Was it good?
Help us Out: For added fun, we are trying to collect a postcard from each of the fifty states! If you, or someone you know, lives in one of these five states; would you consider mailing us a quick postcard? Email us for the address and, as an added bonus, we’ll mail one back to you!
