Each name unique and powerful; the list is endless. Join us on this exciting adventure through Scripture, where we will learn some amazing verses, talk about how those verses should affect our lives, and discuss some practical ways to make these names “real”.
“For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him” – Colossians 1:16
Humans tend to think of themselves as pretty creative; we build large structures, we have all manner of transportation, we sing beautifully, and there are paintings gracing any number of galleries. In all our endeavors, however, we have yet to create something out of nothing. God is the only being who has ever created entirely out of His own power. We use what already exists and turn it into something else, but God needs only to speak. Here in Colossians we are reminded of Who the Creator is and the power of His might.
Imagine being able to simple speak and the heavens appear. You give voice to your thoughts and birds begin to fly in the air, fish swim in the oceans, and trees materialize already bearing fruit ready to be eaten. There is no creative ‘process’, no waiting for the results, and no hard work involved. You say it and it is done. How easy would that make our lives and how fun!
What’s interesting about this verse in Colossians is that we are not only reminded of Who our Creator is, but why He created in the first place. God created out of His own power for His own pleasure and benefit. Creativity begins and ends with God! When we are creative, we begin with what God has already provided and it ought to be done to please the Lord. We have the freedom to use our imaginations, but all things should be done to the glory of God (I Cor. 10:31).
All month-long we are focusing on being creative. Families are baking cookies, making gingerbread houses (sometimes more than once…), wrapping Christmas presents, singing carols, decorating houses, and so much more. This is the perfect time to remember our Creator and give Him all honor and glory.
