After so many years, my brain has run dry of ideas. We’ve taught classes from astronomy to art; cooking to sewing; and everything in between. It’s gotten to the point I can no longer come up something new to suggest for clubs in our homeschool group. Then, inspiration struck. Why work on this alone when I could get a little help from my friends?
Over the years, we’ve been in many clubs and co-ops. I can’t think of a club we haven’t done yet. Just to give you a small idea of our previous fun, here are a few clubs we’ve coordinated:
- Astronomy
- Chemistry
- Animal Habitats
- Bible Heroes
- Discipleship
- Sewing
- Cooking
- Engineering (Legos/KNex)
- Chess
- Origami
- Apologetics
- and more!
What clubs have we missed that you would suggest? Have there been particular clubs your children loved and would enjoy doing again? Perhaps there is a new twist on an old club!
Clubs can be fun, but they can also be a challenge. Let me ask you a question or two…
- If you participate in clubs, what do you like about them?
- What do you dislike about clubs?
- What encourages you to be active, both in teaching and participation?
- What discourages attendance?
- Has there ever been a club which you found incredible?
- How often would you like to see a club repeated?
- What is the best time frame for club meetings, in your opinion?
- How long should a club last?
- Should clubs be age/grade oriented or skill oriented?
When it comes to club meetings and co-ops, a lot of planning, organizing, and praying is needed. It also helps to have a fresh pair of eyes looking at the year, bringing new life to the program. We want the kids to enjoy their time spent together, and be able to take away a few lessons as well.
Thanks in advance for sharing your awesome ideas and experience with us. We can’t wait to hear about what you’ve liked and disliked about homeschool clubs; as well as any new ideas we might have missed.
“Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

You can run it as a club and collect badges as a group. 🙂

We haven’t done well in joining clubs or coops — seems we never have the time to spare. I do think, though, that for us a photography or a nature/animal study group would allow for many fun field trips and connections to the Father.

We are doing photography, which allows for nature walks, and exploring interesting architecture. We are also learning how to use photo editing software.

Our church does a Saint of the Month club for every different grade. On the first Friday of every month, the class focusses on a different Saint. My kids are pre-k and Kindergarten. So the clubs have been based on songs, crafts, books and games.
Also, last year for the little ones, there was a Bible Friends club. They took a story from the bible and either acted it out, made a craft or a puppet show. That might be cool for older kids who like drama. If they took a bible story and did a skit or improv.

Lovely ideas, thank you.

I did a creative writing class for kids of all ages. Littles who could not yet write dictated to their parents. I put together a little six week “course” and we all had a lot of fun!

Home school Speech and Debate Club was a requirement for graduation for all of my kiddos – nothing prepares them for college like it. It’s for kids 12 – 18. It is fun. Kids challenge each other to research, study, listen, think, improve skills. They have super intelligent conversations with peers – everything from politics to apologetic. As far as I know there are two Christian Homeschool Leagues – NCFCA and STOA. You can find the clubs in every state – and there are resources to start your own club if you can’t find one near you.

Our group is much too small to have its own debate club. But, I like the idea of joining the local league.
Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll have to ask my husband his thoughts on this.

What about art? Each week you can highlight a new artist and have a hands on activity to go along with it.

We have done that in the past, but it’s been a while. It might be time to try that again. Thanks for the reminder!
