Resources_Every_HS_Family_Could_UseIn conjunction with our “I Can’t Homeschool” series, let’s explore a few resources every homeschooling family could use.

In order to get a job done, and done well, you need the right tools. What tools would you find in a homeschooler’s tool box? Here are a few we couldn’t live without!

General Homeschool Resources

  • HSLDA – A legal defense organization willing to defend homeschooling worldwide, and educate families of their rights.
  • Student/Teacher ID’s – If you don’t have one already, make one! ID’s get you discounts all over, ensuring extra savings, and opening doors to awesome homeschool opportunities.
  • Library – We practically live at our library. There is a wealth of resources there.
  • Reference Materials – Grab a good atlas, dictionary, thesaurus, and perhaps a book on idioms. You’ll use them. A lot.
  • Internet – Pinterest, YouTube Kids App, and more are waiting to help your family with homeschooling needs.
  • Planner/Organizer – Whether you prefer printed, online, or a word processor, take time to plan out your year and get your family organized.
  • Patience & A Sense of Humor – These, unfortunately, you cannot buy at the local market. Pray, pray, pray for God to grace you with these resources.

  1. We largely follow The Well Trained Mind, but I love Rebecca Rupp’s book, Home Learning Year by Year. It lists goals and resources for each grade level with a small amount of annotation. It is great for setting my yearly goals that need to be submitted to our school district.

  2. Maybe this doesn’t count, but “Lies Homeschool Moms Believe” by Todd Wilson is a must for any homeschooler to read. Repeatedly. I love how he reminds us moms to not sweat the small stuff and enjoy our kids. I’ve gone through this book twice with groups of moms and plan to do it again for the newbies in our co-op soon. More than any academic tool, this book helped me keep a bigger perspective on my homeschooling journey and showed me it’s okay to just relax and enjoy the ride!

  3. Family! We are very blessed to be located close to both sets of grandparents, and we are making use of their time and talents. My mom volunteered to host P.E. days through the year, and my dad has agreed to do several S.T.E.M. Saturdays throughout the year. My father-in-law is great at woodworking, and we would like to come up with a simple project for him to do with the kids. My mother-in-law spent most of her life catering, so I’ve asked her to do one cake decorating class sometime this year. I am also trading out fine arts lessons with my nieces for history/science days with my oldest child. In short, I think we all have abilities and resources to share and so do the people we love! That is my life-saver this year!

  4. love this blog! I have used all of the above at some point, I am a fan of spreading the word about HSLDA! It truly is a resource that every homeschool family needs to have if a need should arise. Blessings, 🙂
